Overview of the High School Social Service Organization Program

Mission

The mission of HSSO is to discuss social justice issues from the Catholic perspective as well as supporting and ministering to the Youth of our Parish. Our goal is to encourage high school students to confront some of the most challenging subjects we face as a society and understand how the Catholic community responds to those issues: poverty, hunger, racism, war and violence, drug and alcohol abuse, depression and suicide, sexuality and teen pregnancy. Research shows that teens are eager to understand and discuss these issues, but often lack a safe-setting to tackle those issues with peers who share their values. HSSO plans to offer that setting. Participating youth then become advocates for those issues by experiencing hands-on experiences through community service. Community service allows the youth to gain authentic experiences that they can reflect within the framework of the Catholic Teachings to incorporate into their values and beliefs.

Who Can Become Involved?

Our meetings and events are open to all high school youth in grades 9th-12th. The youth must be a registered at Saint Luke Parish to participate. However, for special events youth beyond our parish are invited to attend.

When and Where?

Our high school group meets on Sunday evenings from 6:30-8:00 in Flaherty Hall beginning September 13th till late June.
